Just to take a small step forward and not stop at what Massimo Gramellini says in his “Caffè” column in Corriere della Sera, that is, that progressive supporters of hospitality only care about immigrants as long as they land on our shores. And that from the subsequent indifference arise horrors and unspeakable cruelties, like those of the Pakistani gangmasters who lock some of their fellow countrymen workers in a car, who demand to be paid, even if very little, and burn it to punish them and warn colleagues who might make similar union claims.
It seems like a correct observation but it is really incomplete, complicitous. There is much more to remember, simple and obvious things; if we don’t repeat them we cannot understand. The first is that the left is truly hegemonic on the cultural level. We are not talking about the group of artists hosted yesterday by President Sergio Mattarella for the 80th anniversary of the Republic, or its catalog of good sentiments which is part of it. We refer to the value substratum from which any idea must start to be admitted into the debate, thus excluding that General Vannacci on immigration or Roy de Vita on vaccinations can be part of it.
This ethical foundation once consisted of progress, equality, freedom, brotherhood of peoples (or among them? These are two different things), class struggle. Those who are worse off must be better off. A vague Christian trace revisited through socialisms, up to Marx-Leninism, Maoism, Castroism. Things demolished with the Berlin Wall, the USSR, etc. Three alternatives are discovered to propose as absolute good: desire is a right, so I can live and do as I please, if the rules do not allow it they must be changed; the human being ruins the environment, does not respect the planet, causes damage that we must repair by going back, doing less; we all have the right to travel and live wherever we want, the place where we are born is arbitrary, especially if the grass of the more or less nearby place is greener.
The first must has created a tendency towards anxious-depressive unhappiness, which concerns all those who are already well or fairly well off. The second has damaged those who thought that building and manufacturing was good for their income and society. The third has caused the value of work to collapse, bringing competitors willing to do anything into a market where technology already leads employers to hope to worsen conditions. Bourgeoisie, capitalism, and Western proletariat have been hit. Which has compromised the popular and electoral appeal of the left, even if the right often proposes poor alternatives, and weakened the strength of politics leaving room for other actors such as techno-science and financial economy.
The non-existence of green policies, mass radicalism, and blind and cruel immigrationism cloaked in fake solidarity produce horrors like the one being talked about these days. Against which it should be reiterated that we do not take in just anyone but only a quota of selected people, except in few cases where they are refugees from places where they risk a worse fate than the one they have here. To help others and protect ourselves.
