The professor, lifetime senator, former European Union commissioner, former Prime Minister Mario Monti kindly called me – with a style and irony that happily reminded me of Giulio Andreotti – to challenge me to point out an occasion when he proposed himself for another technical and bipartisan term at Palazzo Chigi with the prospect, I believe, of a crisis in this late stage of the legislature or an electoral tie next year.
Obviously, this is the malicious impression I gave him by acknowledging his merit, realism, sense of responsibility, and so on regarding the criticisms directed at the opposition from the columns of the Corriere della Sera, closing themselves off like a fortress to the proposal made to them in Parliament by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni not to limit themselves to attacking her, but also to lend a hand in an exceptional international conjuncture like the one we are experiencing. With an American president who has just decided on another war against Iran but at the same time to suspend it, or to extend the previous truce.
But I, as I told the person concerned, have not at all attributed to Monti a self-candidacy for Palazzo Chigi, although being Andreotti-style malicious, that is convinced that thinking badly is a sin but often, if not always, one guesses right. I also had a friendly debate on Facebook with a reader, Giorgio Riondino, also familiar with the political halls, who imagined Monti interested in the 2029 Quirinale. For which – I reminded him – the former Prime Minister no longer has the age, as another former Prime Minister like Giuliano Amato recently wrote contesting Libero which had automatically enrolled him in the race for the Presidency.
I have only expressed agreement, which I confirm, with the criticisms made by Monti towards the opposition in the exercise of their functions, more often exasperated than reasonable, to say the least.
