Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, congratulating Simone Venturini, the new mayor of Venice, and the other center-right mayors elected, starting with the one in Reggio Calabria, Francesco Cannizzaro, after more than 10 years of left-wing government, exults: “… and today too we postpone the much-announced collapse of the center-right to tomorrow.” On social media, regarding the fact that Elly Schlein had closed her electoral campaign in Venice saying “from here we send Meloni home,” the Prime Minister jokes: “Alright.”
Death of the much-emphasized left-wing Venice as the restart of the so-called broad front after the overwhelming victory of No in the referendum on justice reform.
If the clothes don’t make the man, the referendum, even on a vital issue, does not make the Municipal Elections of this electoral round that saw more than 700 municipalities vote.
The center-right wins from North to South, the center-left still maintains numerous and important positions. But it is precisely the emphasis on the post-referendum “remuntada,” according to which for the left the victory of No would have led straight to success in the Municipal Elections as a forerunner of the General Elections, that makes this electoral round a victory for the center-right, beyond the detailed numerical calculations.
A cold shower, indeed a freeze, for what the editor of the newspaper “Il Tempo,” Daniele Capezzone, sharply denounced alone: a unique narrative by newspapers and public and private TV, a “fake narrative,” according to which the center-right was already on the decline. Instead, the numbers from North to South contradict the crisis of the coalition governing the country.
From the result, a warning also to the center-right: the vote is very free and not always classifiable into automatically labelable circuits.
“The center-right advances, the League confirms and conquers mayors throughout Italy,” exults Deputy Prime Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini.
Antonio Tajani, Deputy Prime Minister, FI leader: “With Cannizzaro we win in Reggio Calabria, FI grows everywhere, the center-right conquers and consolidates support, the left was deluded.”
