China builds soft power while the US burns bridges. FT report

How the US and China Differ in Soft Power Approaches. An In-Depth Analysis from the Financial Times Featured in Liturri's Review.

(Financial Times Europe, Gideon Rachman, 05 May 2026)

China is developing growing cultural influence worldwide, from successes in billiards to the popularity of TikTok, from the cyberpunk architecture of Chongqing to the virality of expressions typical of everyday Chinese life. This soft power emerges precisely as the Trump administration, with aggressive tariffs, attacks on allies, and divisive rhetoric, is rapidly eroding the reputation and attractiveness of the United States globally.

Surveys show that in Southeast Asia and among the same European and Canadian allies, preference for alignment with Beijing rather than Washington is increasing.

The contrast is also evident in technological and economic choices: while Tesla loses ground in Europe due to its association with Trump, Chinese brands like Omoda and Jaecoo gain market shares. Beijing eliminates tariffs on African imports and makes its AI model DeepSeek open source, while the US imposes 25% tariffs on European cars. This dynamic risks pushing third countries to adopt Chinese technological standards and distance themselves from an America perceived as unpredictable and coercive.

Growing Chinese Soft Power

“China is developing ‘soft power’ – the cultural appeal that can enhance a country’s global image. TikTok, billiards with Chinese champions, Chongqing’s cyberpunk architecture, and viral phrases like ‘a very Chinese time in my life’ are examples.”

Decline of American Reputation

“A survey among Southeast Asian elites shows that for the second time a slim majority would choose China over the United States if forced to decide. Similar surveys in Germany, France, Britain, and Canada indicate it is ‘better to depend on China than on the US.’”

Contrast in Economic Policies

“Beijing eliminates tariffs on imports from almost all African countries, while Washington announces 25% tariffs on European cars. China makes its AI model DeepSeek open source, promoting its global adoption.”

Snooker as a Symbol

“If Wu Yize wins the world snooker championship, he will be the second Chinese champion after Zhao Xintong. China and Britain have become the two global centers of excellence in this sport.”

Risk for the US

“To counter China’s growing economic power, the United States will need to create international partnerships. This will require rebuilding its stock of soft power. Otherwise, Trump could truly find himself ‘snookered’ by Xi.”
