The only certain news is the nightmare night spent by tens of thousands of Deutsche Bahn travelers, disembarking from high-speed, intercity, and regional trains at extremely crowded stations. Searching for a taxi or some night bus to return to the places they were supposed to reach, or waiting for the German state railways to identify the fault and restart the trains.
The culprit was the GSM-R digital communication system. A breakdown lasting about two hours, which occurred late last night, Tuesday, June 23, caused an unprecedented halt of the entire German railway network, with the first trains starting to move again around 12:30 AM and a full normalization expected only during the course of this morning.
ALARM IN THE RAILWAY NETWORK
From its Berlin headquarters, Deutsche Bahn announced that its IT specialists worked throughout the night until they identified and fixed the problem. “The fault was resolved quickly,” the company communicated, thanking passengers for their patience. The company’s regional transport manager, Evelyn Palla, explained in an interview with the newspaper Bild that the situation was brought under control thanks to the activation of an emergency system.
However, the interruption had ripple effects well beyond the two-hour stoppage.
Numerous connections were canceled or suffered heavy delays even at dawn. In North Rhine-Westphalia, one of the busiest railway hubs in the country, the company warned that returning to normal would take several hours. Long queues formed at information desks in many stations, and numerous travelers were stranded. In Frankfurt am Main, some passengers reported not finding any available rooms in the city’s hotels, while at Berlin’s central station there were complaints about the lack of communication. Railway staff, mobilized in an emergency, managed the situation as best as possible, and the company distributed vouchers for taxis and overnight stays.
THE GSM-R SYSTEM ISSUE
The infrastructure at fault is the Global System for Mobile Communications-Railway, known by the acronym GSM-R. It is the network that has progressively replaced the old analog radio systems and ensures operational communications between onboard personnel, train drivers, and control centers. The company DB InfraGo, responsible for railway infrastructure, emphasizes that the system guarantees high safety standards and allows dedicated group communications.
However, this technology has shown vulnerabilities before, notes the German press this morning. In recent years, several incidents have caused traffic suspensions in various regions of Germany.
Tuesday’s incident, however, had a nationwide impact and involved not only long-distance and regional trains but also suburban lines managed by Deutsche Bahn (the S-Bahn, improperly known as surface subways) and several private operators. In Berlin and Stuttgart, the S-Bahn network was completely stopped.
But above all, freight transport, particularly intense during evening and night hours, was paralyzed.
CRITICISMS AND CALLS FOR CLARITY
The episode has reignited debate on the vulnerability of German railway infrastructure. The association “Die Güterbahnen,” representing private freight transport operators, has called for a thorough investigation, arguing that explanations from DB InfraGo alone are insufficient and that more effective monitoring and management tools are needed.
Initial critical voices have also come from the political world. Oliver Krischer, Transport Minister of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, used strong words. According to the Green Party member, the fact that a single technical fault can stop the entire national railway traffic represents “a new low point” for a system already marked by chronic problems. Krischer demanded full transparency on the causes of the incident and the introduction of more robust emergency procedures, judging it unacceptable that tens of thousands of people were forced to spend the night on trains or in stations.
From Berlin, meanwhile, the priority remains to understand whether Tuesday’s blackout was just an isolated incident or a sign of a deeper fragility in the German railway network.
