Cutting to the ultralong collaboration between the Italo-French Stellantis and Dongfeng Group. A collaboration that the group absorbed following the merger with the French PSA. The two parties have announced the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement aimed at producing Peugeot and Jeep branded vehicles in China for the Chinese market and for export to other markets.
DETAILS OF THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN STELLANTIS AND DONGFENG
Stellantis and Dongfeng have also signed a non-binding strategic memorandum for the joint venture Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen Automobile to produce at least two new energy vehicles (NEVs) under the Peugeot brand at its Wuhan plant.
“The models will feature the new design identity inspired by the concept cars unveiled at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show,” reads the press release, referring to this render. Specifically, the two vehicles shown at the Chinese event (here is the event video) are a sedan and an SUV. Both, according to current information, would be made in China but intended for both the Chinese market and export worldwide.
Furthermore, starting from 2027, the plan foresees the launch of production, at the Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen Automobile plant in Wuhan, of two NEV off-road vehicles under the Jeep brand destined for global markets. With the uncertainty of the possibility of also entering the US market, as Washington increasingly fortifies itself behind new highly protectionist rules hostile specifically towards Chinese-made cars.
THE VALUE OF THE AGREEMENT
The project, which is reported to “benefit from favorable industrial policies in the automotive sector of Hubei province and the municipality of Wuhan,” involves a total investment exceeding 8 billion Chinese yuan, equivalent to one billion euros, of which Stellantis plans a contribution of about 130 million euros.
In recent days, press rumors have reported intense talks between the Italo-French Group and several Chinese brands interested in the possibility of taking over European plants currently less used by the Old Continent manufacturer, even by acquiring them. Additionally, a partnership with the Chinese companies JAC and Huawei is also being studied in an attempt to revive the Italian brand plunged into a very deep crisis.
