Google could invest up to 40 billion dollars in Anthropic, the artificial intelligence startup led by Dario Amodei and mainly known for the Claude language model: 10 billion will arrive immediately, and the other 30 billion upon reaching certain performance goals. It is a financing structure similar to the agreement signed by Anthropic a week earlier with another American Big Tech, Amazon: 25 billion in total, of which 5 immediate and 20 later.
WHAT GOOGLE WANTS…
For Google, Anthropic is both a rival and a customer. The Mountain View tech giant is indeed heavily investing in the development of its Gemini language models. At the same time, however, it intends to position itself as a provider of infrastructure for artificial intelligence, from cloud computing systems to specialized processors.
And indeed, over the next five years Anthropic will receive 5 gigawatts of computing power from Google Cloud: the parent company aims to make cloud computing its main source of revenue, to offset the slowdown in the online advertising business. As for microchips, last year Google and Anthropic struck a deal for the supply of 1 million TPUs, a type of microprocessor designed to quickly perform calculations in AI models: Google’s TPUs – the new generation was recently presented – are one of the main alternatives to Nvidia’s GPUs, highly sought after for their performance but expensive.
Google’s and Amazon’s investments in Anthropic are considered “circular” financing agreements: the two Big Tech companies invest in client companies to fuel demand for their own products and services. Nvidia has also made numerous circular investments, for example in OpenAI, xAi, CoreWeave, and in Anthropic itself.
… AND WHAT ANTHROPIC WANTS
The capital and computing power guaranteed by Google, and others, serve Anthropic to fuel its growth. Its latest products – namely Claude Code, the AI agent for code writing, and Cowork – are having great success and the startup needs computing power to meet all this demand. Last year it said it would invest 50 billion in building data centers in the United States to equip itself with the infrastructure necessary for training and using its models.
HOW MUCH ANTHROPIC IS WORTH
Anthropic has reached a valuation of 380 billion dollars but investors would like to see it rise to 800 billion, also because the startup is considering an initial public offering, possibly in October. Annualized revenues have gone from 9 billion dollars at the end of 2025 to about 30 billion.
