Initially planned for last February 6 or 8, then postponed to March, the launch of Artemis II is now set for April 1.
On March 12, NASA announced the new date after a technical review that assessed the mission’s flight readiness – which will see astronauts orbit the Moon for the first time in over 50 years – although the agency specified that some activities remain to be completed before launch.
The U.S. agency expressed confidence that the issue has been resolved and plans to return the rocket to the launch pad on March 19, with a launch date no earlier than April 1.
During a press conference, NASA leadership also highlighted the risks associated with the mission.
The last time humans traveled beyond low Earth orbit (LEO) was almost 55 years ago, during the Apollo 17 mission. During Artemis II, once the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion spacecraft are in space, Orion will separate from the rocket and perform several maneuvers to raise its orbit around Earth, eventually positioning itself on a free-return trajectory around the Moon. This will send the spacecraft and its crew on a slingshot-like journey around the Moon, using Earth’s gravity to bring Orion back to Earth.
The flight represents a key milestone of the Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the lunar surface by 2028 and to build a lunar base for long-term operations, emphasizes Bloomberg.

THE LAUNCH WINDOW OPENS ON APRIL 1
“Although I and the agency are confident in considering April 1 as the first opportunity, keep in mind that we still have work to do,” said Lori Glaze, acting associate administrator of NASA’s Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, during the press conference. “Everything is going quite well,” Glaze assured.
NASA currently plans to transfer the Space Launch System rocket and the Orion spacecraft from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Complex 39B on March 19. This would allow a launch as early as April 1, the opening date of the next launch period for the mission, which will close on April 6.
THE CREW AND THE GOAL OF ARTEMIS II
The mission, called Artemis II, will mark the first time the rocket and capsule carry humans. During the 10-day journey, crew members, NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, and Victor Glover, along with Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, are expected to orbit the Moon, traveling farther from Earth than any human has ever gone.
DELAYS AND TECHNICAL TESTS
The launch is already two years late due to issues encountered with the heat shield during the first Artemis mission, which saw the Space Launch System and Orion capsule reach the Moon without a crew onboard. In December 2024, the space agency set the deadline for Artemis II’s launch by the end of April 2026.
“At this point, we are very focused on April,” Glaze concluded. As mentioned, NASA had planned to launch in February, but agency officials decided to postpone the mission to conduct further tests. If the final dress rehearsal – the wet dress rehearsal – carried out on the night of February 19-20 ended successfully with fueling of both stages of the SLS, during the night of February 21 a helium fueling issue was detected in the upper stage of the rocket. This forced the space agency to move the spacecraft away from the launch pad to investigate the problem.
On March 12, NASA officials stated they had completed a two-day review of flight readiness for the Artemis II mission and agreed to proceed with launch preparations.
WHAT’S AT STAKE
Finally, this 10-day mission will not actually touch the Moon. Instead, the crew will fly over it, potentially traveling farther from Earth than any humans before them, testing the life support, navigation, and communication systems of the Orion spacecraft in deep space. The results will influence how NASA flies subsequent missions. Last February, NASA postponed the return of astronauts to the Moon: the Artemis III mission will no longer land on the Moon in 2027 but will be a demonstration mission in low Earth orbit. The first lunar landing is now expected with Artemis IV in 2028. The decision, announced by administrator Jared Isaacman, follows technical problems encountered during tests of the Artemis II mission and also foresees a higher frequency of launches and a more standardized configuration of the SLS rocket to reduce risks.
With so much at stake in the mission, NASA leadership emphasizes that “they will fly when we are ready,” not just when the weather allows. It has been a long time since astronauts last flew to the Moon, but Artemis II will make history in many other ways as well, highlights Gizmodo.
It will be the first crewed mission to leave low Earth orbit since Apollo 17. This achievement will mark the beginning of a new era in human deep space exploration, taking astronauts farther from Earth than anyone else has in over half a century.
