(How Iran Has Turned the Strait of Hormuz into an Asymmetric Fortress Challenging Western Superiority: Low-Cost Drones, Electronic Warfare, and Supersonic Missiles, excerpt from the Tech & Privacy newsletter)
In a world already shaken by conflicts and energy instability, the Strait of Hormuz emerges these days as the focal point of an Iranian strategy that mixes advanced indigenous technology, asymmetric weapons, and international partnerships.
While joint airstrikes by the United States and Israel continue to hit Iranian targets – Tehran has transformed this narrow maritime passage – just 33 kilometers wide at its narrowest point – into a virtual “kill zone,” where drones, missiles, unmanned vehicles, and electronic interference dictate the rules of global traffic.
With 20% of the world’s oil passing through here until a few days ago, Iran does not need a physical blockade to paralyze the international economy: the threat alone, supported by a sophisticated arsenal and prior backing from powers like Russia and China, is enough.
The Iranian strategy, rooted in decades of preparation, reflects an asymmetric approach designed to counter Western naval superiority.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) coordinates a surveillance system that integrates real-time intelligence from air, surface, and underwater assets. “Control of the strait is no longer traditional but fully intelligent,” stated a deputy commander of the IRGC Navy. This statement is not rhetoric: since February 28, 2026, the start date of the “Epic Fury” operation by the USA and Israel, traffic has collapsed by 70-90%, with only a few ships recorded transiting in the following days, according to maritime intelligence data.
AT THE HEART OF THIS GRIP IS A MIX OF DEADLY LOW-COST TECHNOLOGIES
Iran produces about 10,000 drones per month, including the Shahed-136 models with a range of 700-1,000 km, capable of prolonged attacks that could disrupt the strait for months.
These UAVs not only monitor but can strike ships, as demonstrated in attacks on six vessels since the conflict began.
Complementing these are unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) like the Azhdar for mine laying and intelligence, naval mines (estimated 5,000-6,000 units), and anti-ship missiles. Among these stand out the Ghadir, an anti-ship cruise missile (ASCM) with a range up to 300 km, and the Khalij Fars, a supersonic anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) with a maneuverable warhead and electro-optical seeker, both launchable from mobile coastal batteries hidden in tunnels along the Iranian coast and on contested islands like Abu Musa.
ELECTRONIC WARFARE PLAYS A CRUCIAL ROLE
This “swarm” tactic – swarms of UAV drones, fast USV kamikaze boats, and UUVs – is designed to overwhelm superior fleets, such as the US Fifth Fleet. The IRGC tested these capabilities in the “Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz” exercise in February 2026, where advanced radars and supersonic missiles demonstrated the ability to close parts of the strait for hours. Behind this technology is a domestic production ecosystem led by entities like the Aerospace Industries Organization (AIO) for missiles, the Defense Industries Organization (DIO) for mines and vessels, and Iran Electronics Industries (IEI) for EW systems. Despite sanctions, Iran has reverse-engineered foreign designs.
THE REAL BOOST COMES FROM EXTERNAL ALLIANCES
Russia has begun deliveries of Su-35 jets equipped with Irbis-E radars to detect stealth aircraft; China supplies supersonic CM-302 missiles (export version of the YJ-12, Mach 3, “carrier killer” with a range over 400 km) and YLC-8B anti-stealth radars, which help track US movements in the Gulf. These partnerships include shared early warning intelligence.
The strategy is not only defensive. Iran aims to impose costs on Gulf neighbors to push Washington and Tel Aviv to cease attacks. “Not a single drop of oil will leave the region,” threatened an IRGC general.
With rising oil prices and global supply chains in crisis, the conflict amplifies systemic risks, potentially leading to a “global energy shock.”
As the world holds its breath, Iran bets that its technological resilience and eastern alliances can withstand the Western coalition, but with ships anchored and markets in turmoil,
In my opinion, there are three big questions on the table:
- How long will this chokehold last before the world intervenes?
- Trump announced the crisis would last four weeks; if unresolved by April – with wide consequences on international and US markets – what repercussions will there be on the midterm elections (much closer than one might think)?
- Who will take control of black gold after this crisis?
