“President Trump still at “war” against Europe, accused of not supporting him in his campaigns. The withdrawal of five thousand troops from Germany announced.” This is what is read this morning in the Corriere della Sera in a front-page summary of five news and analysis articles spread over three pages, from the tenth to the thirteenth.
Of superfluous or improper, as you prefer, in that summary of the Corriere I find the quotation marks applied to Trump’s war on Europe, including Italy, also affected by the announced withdrawal of American protection troops whose mandate has now expired, announced by the American president. Who neither forgives us for the defense of the Pope by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after the attack by her compatriot Trump nor the refusal of the Sigonella base to US bombers on a war mission against Iran that wanted to land there without prior, not instantaneous or subsequent authorization.
Trump’s war on Europe has not (yet?) seen bombs, missiles, drones, and other destructive and bloody devices, perhaps so as not to divert them from those set aside to be used against Iran at the expiration of the truce and its penultimate ultimatums. But the effects of the vocal and paper bombs that Trump launches from the Oval Office of the White House and surroundings, with the accompaniment of tariffs and the like, are certainly being felt in Italy and other European countries due to the political and economic disorder they produce.
Another victim of the war, without quotation marks, of the American president is naturally NATO, still equipped with letterhead, offices, arsenals, and military, technical, and administrative personnel. A NATO now truly a paper tiger, as Trump himself had proposed to make it, destined to make fortunes for Putin at the Kremlin, in Ukraine, and wherever he feels like attacking in his exercise of post-Soviet tsarism.
In this situation, there is only pity for those in Rome, on both banks of the Tiber, who are about to welcome, hear, and perhaps embrace the American Secretary of State Marco Antonio (indeed) Rubio, who is about to arrive in the middle of an out-of-season Carnival.
