Donald Trump’s attack is disjointed, unprecedented. Moreover, it appears “senseless,” as described by an observer like Daniele Capezzone, director of the newspaper “Il Tempo.” Giorgia Meloni immediately responds sharply and harshly to the President of the United States, who accuses our Prime Minister in a phone interview with a journalist from “La/7” of having “begged” him at the G7 to take a photo with him. Meloni goes hard in a social video: “Some things deserve an immediate response. Donald Trump’s statements are completely fabricated. I am frankly stunned. I don’t know why the President of the United States behaves this way with his own allies, and this is not the first time it has happened.”
Meloni particularly stings him in a passage where she also seems to allude to the not-so-brilliant agreement with Iran: “I can only say that it is regrettable that he does not have the same determination with the enemies of the West, with the enemies of the United States, with leaderships with whom he instead shows himself much more accommodating.”
The Italian Prime Minister concludes with a firm warning: “But one thing he must remember: I, and Italy, never beg.”
Meloni receives international solidarity from European leaders such as Macron as well as from all institutions, starting with the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, with the Presidents of the Senate and Chamber, Ignazio La Russa and Lorenzo Fontana, and from all Italian politics.
However, the opposition, while showing the obligatory solidarity with the Italian Prime Minister, once again seems unable to fully defend national pride and interest, without ifs or buts, going beyond political fences.
And so, although always divided on foreign policy and beyond, Elly Schlein, Giuseppe Conte, and Matteo Renzi manage to find a common point even in this difficult situation, but negatively, in the repeated accusation that Meloni was too subordinate to Trump.
Not to mention the radical left wing of Avs, where after formal solidarity, they even go as far as asking the Prime Minister to “step aside.”
Only Carlo Calenda expresses appreciation and solidarity with Meloni without ifs or buts.
For the rest, the defense of national interest and dignity, even in the face of the serious diplomatic crisis that saw our Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, cancel his trip to the USA following Trump’s harsh words, for which Meloni also receives total solidarity from the other Deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini, does not seem to be the hallmark of the opposition to the Meloni government.
They do not distinguish in the unconditional anti-Trumpism the inappropriate attack on Meloni from other criticisms with a political basis that the US President had already made against the EU.
Even the reaction to this affair does not seem to be a good omen for the so-called broad camp to form a credible alternative government.
