Mario Monti, 83 years old as of March, yes, him indeed, the lifetime senator who as a “young old man,” as Amintore Fanfani would have said in his time, made German mothers with daughters to marry dream, has returned with the accordion on the front page of “his” Corriere della Sera to play in favor, or almost, of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Whom he had instead abandoned during the referendum campaign on the constitutional reform of the judiciary, announcing a no due to the “context,” including international, in which, regardless of the merits of that reform, a yes victory would have made her lose her head.
Now that “his” referendum has been lost and the head has not rolled, the prime minister would deserve the hand she recently asked for, proposed, and so on to the opposition to practice a bipartisan policy – so they say – in the European path of greater unity and strength in the face of the blows that American President Donald Trump deals to the Union. And that even Mario Draghi, although not a lifetime senator like Monti, now considers irreversible, demanding a more reactive Europe.
“The opposition,” Monti wrote and warned, “might be tempted, and it would be understandable after three and a half years of a ‘wall against wall’ line practiced by the government, to let the majority rot like a fruit on the tree of arrogance and fall by itself. But besides not benefiting the general interest of Italy and Europe, this complacent detachment, I do not believe, would benefit the opposition themselves. The country,” Monti warned, probably convinced of the impracticability of a new emergency technical government of his own, “even in the substantial part that does not appreciate this majority or that does not vote, probably needs to witness adult and responsible behavior from the political forces.” That is, from the parties, or what remains of them after their personalistic involution following the disastrous suppression of the preference vote that everyone, or almost everyone, asks to restore but no one, or almost no one, really wants.
