Nscale, a British startup for artificial intelligence infrastructure, has reached a valuation of 14.6 billion dollars thanks to a 2 billion funding round also participated by Nvidia, the largest microchip company in the world.
NSCALE’S FUNDING COMES FROM EUROPE, AMERICA, AND CHINA
In addition to Nvidia, the round included computer system companies Dell (American) and Lenovo (Chinese), Finnish telecommunications operator Nokia, Norwegian holding company Aker Asa, and New York investment fund 8090 Industries.
WHAT NSCALE DOES
Founded in 2024, headquartered in London, Nscale specializes in the development and management of data centers for artificial intelligence and cloud computing services: it owns data centers in the United Kingdom, Norway, Portugal, Iceland, and the United States.
Recently, Nscale announced an “extended partnership” with Microsoft, the main financier of OpenAi: it also collaborates with the latter on the mega-infrastructure project Stargate with a data center in Norway.
… AND WHAT IT WILL DO WITH THE NEW CAPITAL
The startup has announced it will use the new capital raised to accelerate the development of integrated infrastructure for artificial intelligence – from computing power based on Gpu processors to software for data management – in Europe, North America, and Asia.
According to CEO Josh Payne, the AI boom is “leading to the greatest infrastructure achievement in human history,” a concept often repeated by Nvidia’s head, Jensen Huang. Recently, in fact, Huang stated that “our customers are rushing to invest in computing for artificial intelligence, the factories fueling the industrial revolution of artificial intelligence and their future growth,” and that “in the new world of artificial intelligence, computing equals revenue.”
The investment in Nscale is the latest example of “circular funding” carried out by Nvidia in recent months. This term refers to investments made by Nvidia in companies that are its clients – such as OpenAi, Anthropic, xAi, or CoreWeave – with the goal of fueling demand for its processors.
IPO IN SIGHT?
In October, Nscale confirmed to Cnbc that it is working on an initial public offering (IPO).
NEW NAMES ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The startup also announced the entry into the board of directors of Sheryl Sandberg (former COO of Meta), Nick Clegg (former UK Deputy Prime Minister and Meta executive), and Susan Decker (former president of Yahoo).
