Peter Thiel leads a $140 million investment in the American startup Panthalassa, which develops floating data centers powered by ocean wave energy to meet the growing electricity demand of artificial intelligence. The technology harnesses wave motion to drive submerged turbines and produce energy directly at sea, with nodes nearly 85 meters tall housing AI servers cooled by seawater.
The company, valued near one billion dollars after the round, plans to commercially launch the first pilot plant as early as 2027. Thiel, a long-time supporter of extreme solutions like seasteading, sees the ocean as the final frontier for future computing, joined by investors such as Marc Benioff, Max Levchin, and John Doerr.
The initiative is part of a series of ambitious projects to overcome AI’s energy bottleneck, from restarting decommissioned nuclear plants to space-based solar data centers, focusing on remote and scalable renewable sources that do not depend on the mainland.
Thiel’s record investment
“Peter Thiel leads a $140 million round in the startup Panthalassa, which develops floating data centers powered by ocean wave energy to meet the explosive demand for AI power.”
Innovative technology
“Panthalassa’s ‘nodes’ are nearly as tall as Big Ben, with most of the steel structure below the surface. The data centers move autonomously by exploiting the hull shape, requiring no engines or seabed anchors, allowing operation in remote ocean areas and producing tens of terawatts of energy.”
AI energy context
“As the demand for AI computing capacity far exceeds available supply, Panthalassa represents one of the most ambitious projects to solve the energy bottleneck.”
Thiel on the ocean as a frontier
“The future requires more compute than we can imagine. Extraterrestrial solutions are no longer science fiction. Panthalassa has opened the ocean frontier.”
Valuation and goals
“The new funding will allow the company to expand its pilot plant, which could become commercial as soon as next year. The deal values Panthalassa near one billion dollars.”
